Research

Working with the Chief Instructor at the AA as well as interviewing a group of current driving instructors to understand the way pupils learn the highway code. This led me to creating wireframes and a prototype to test on users.

Feedback from users was positive, but they wanted more, such as the ability to track progress over time. This led me to the key user metric: When are they ready for their theory test? Using a combination of historical data and tracking their current rates for mock tests, we would be able to fairly confidently predict when a user was proficient enough to pass their theory test.

Features

The app would have to appeal to teenagers. It would have to be detailed and interesting enough to engage them to learn the Highway Code. Gamification was kept to a minimum for MVP with a simple “Challenge a friend” feature to a test-off.

No account was necessary for a limited set of questions, but to unlock everything an account would need to be created. This would then allow the user to track their progress, find a local instructor and book lessons.

Design

The questions are supplied by the DVSA and can come in different formats. Working out a common template that could handle the variety of questions and answers as well as extra help with every question took the majority of the time. Testing the layout with users we found right balance of speed, usability and comprehension.

Creating different ways to learn, such as multiple choice, watching videos, gamification by challenging a friend, kept the learning interesting and allowed pupils to learn in their own individual way.

Tracking the pupil’s progress was critical for user feedback and motivation. This would allow the app to predict when a user was ready for the real DVSA Theory Test.
